A classic Russian salad. Serve with a shot of vodka on the side.

Layer the following in order inside a 6cm high food presentation ring: grated, cooked potato, grated cooked carrot, finely chopped herring mixed with mayonnaise, finely chopped shallots, diced cooked beets, a thin layer of mayonnaise, and sprinkle the top with finely grated egg white and yolk (chopped separately).

Refrigerate to firm up a bit. Remove the ring, garnish the plate with fresh greens (dill, parsley, spring onion slivers), and serve.
